A heavy morning downpour on Saturday morning claimed more than just a few wet spots around Singapore. The Bendemeer Market and Food Centre was reportedly affected badly too, as water began pouring down the ceiling.
Stall holders were reportedly desperately shifting their goods away from the water, afraid that their goods will be damaged. One of the stall holders affected said that people are not walking around that area of the Market anymore because of the water, and some of their goods were no longer as fresh as before, as things like vegetables had to be kept away from the water.
The Jalan Besar Town Council, which oversees the ward the Market is located in, said that the volume of water overwhelmed the gutters, as it was an unexpectedly heavy rain. The Town Council also said that they activated their workers to help out the stalls during the incident, and that they will take the opportunity when the stalls are closed to check the viability of the gutters and carry out repairs if necessary.
They did not indicate if stallholders will be compensated for this.
